The navigators sextant is typically recognized as a instrument used at sea. But the sextant together with a leveling stand was also used on land by surveyors. The sextants primary use was to take astronomical readings to determine latitude but the same instrument turned on a horizontal plane was used to measure across rivers, bays and other broad geographic areas with limited access. This beautiful German made sextant together with it's leveling stand, dates from the second half of the 19th century. This print is 23"x18".
